Lacrosse: No. 1 Notre Dame loses at No. 2 Virginia

Virginia, the top-ranked team in NCAA lacrosse, was defeated by Maryland last week. The Irish are undefeated after their resounding victory over Michigan, and they are currently ranked first in the country.

That also set up a matchup between the Cavaliers, who were rated first last week, and the Fighting Irish, who are ranked first this week, in South Bend.

The Irish’s perfect start to the year came to an end following a tough game against No. 3 Virginia. Chris Kavanagh and Pat Kavanagh scored early in the third quarter to get Notre Dame to within 7-6, but it was not to be.

Both teams scored once more before the end of the quarter, with Virginia going on a 4-0 run to cut Maryland’s lead to 11-7. The Cavaliers took a 13-9 advantage into the fourth quarter and blew the game open by scoring eight unanswered points. They went on to win, 15-10.

In light of the outcome, Notre Dame can no longer claim to be the best college football team in the country. In a previous overtime thriller this year, the Irish defeated then-ranked Maryland, while then-No. 3 Virginia lost to Maryland. With such a dominating performance against the Irish, it seems likely that Virginia will return to the top of the standings the following week.
